Wareham Police Department eligible for Bureau of Justice Assistance Grant

The Wareham Police Department has been notified that we are eligible to apply to the Bureau of Justice Assistance for funds under the justice Assistance Grant. The Plymouth County District Attorney’s Office is the official applicant joining with the communities of Brockton, Wareham, and Plymouth. Wareham is eligible to apply for $12,462.30 for crime prevention, equipment, technology, information systems, and public safety initiatives. The funds are available to use over the next four years.

It is our intention to utilize the funds to, purchase equipment, and make improvements in the areas that would otherwise be curtailed through lack of other funding sources. Namely, it is our intent to purchase equipment that will continue our commitment to provide our officers with the necessary equipment and resources to do their job. The funds are available over the next four years.

Wareham police taking part in “OPERATION MEDS SWEEP”

WAREHAM POLICE DEPARTMENT TO PARTICIPATE IN “OPERATION MEDS SWEEP”

 DEA and local police to offer prescription drug disposal

    The Wareham Police Department will conduct a prescription drug disposal day as part of a nationwide initiative by the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) on Saturday, April 28, 2012 from 10:00 am to 2:00 pm at the Wareham Fire Department at 273 Main Street. Wareham and surrounding area town residents are encouraged to gather expired, unused and unneeded medications, which will be collected and safely disposed of by the DEA at no cost to the local community.

Chief Richard Stanley urges Wareham residents to take advantage of this opportunity to safely dispose of unwanted prescription drugs. “Prescription are currently abused by people in greater numbers than cocaine, heroin, hallucinogens and inhalants combined,” Chief Stanley said. Non-medical use of prescription drugs is very dangerous and leads to a high rate of addiction. In most cases, people are able to obtain these drugs from their homes, or from a friend’s home.” Chief Stanley stated that the Wareham Police Department is committed to the effort to help remove potentially dangerous drugs from area homes and dispose of them legally and safely. Chief Stanley added, “Prescription drug abuse is a growing problem and one that we all need to address.”

The prescription drug disposal is completely anonymous and free of charge for area residents. Please note that syringes, needles, medical devices, thermometers and IV bags cannot be accepted.

Three Arrested in Armed Robbery Investigation

As a result of an investigation by members of the Wareham Police Department Detective and Patrol Divisions, three individuals have been arrested on outstanding warrants pertaining to an Armed Robbery incident reported to have occurred at the end of Station St. in Wareham on Thursday, April 5, 2012. On that date, officers responded to the report of a male walking in the area, bleeding from the head. Officers located the male, who reported that he had met with a female and two males at that location, at which time he was assaulted with an object and robbed of his cash by the two males. The victim, a 20 year old male Plymouth resident, reported to officers that he had met the male and female earlier in the day, adding that the second male was unknown to him. The victim was transported to Tobey Hospital by Wareham EMS, where he was treated and released regarding being struck on the head.

Based on information received at the scene, officers applied for an arrest warrant for the known male involved in the armed robbery incident, identified as Robert Mahan, age 21, of #6 Windy Hill Drive in West Wareham. Mr. Mahan was arrested without incident during a motor vehicle stop on the night of Thursday, April 12th. Investigation of the original incident led to further arrests regarding this incident, when 18 year old Kaycee Hayes of #16 Windy Hill Drive West Wareham, and 21 year old Kyle Smith of #5 Tremont Center Rd. West Wareham, were arrested at their homes today on warrants obtained pertaining to their involvement in the armed robbery incident on April 5th.

During the arrest of Kyle Smith at #5 Tremont Center Rd., officers discovered that he was in possession of an alligator, approximately 2 feet in length, which was kept in an aquarium. Mr. Smith was charged with the illegal misdemeanor possession of the alligator, which was secured by the Wareham Police Dept. Animal Control Officer and confiscated by the Environmental Police Department.

Robert Mahan, Kaycee Hayes, and Kyle Smith have been charged with Armed Robbery and will be arraigned at the Wareham 4th District Court.

Chief Richard Stanley commended the involved officers and detectives of the Wareham Police Department, who worked cooperatively to arrest the three individuals involved in this violent crime, which has no place in Wareham.
