On Saturday, February 1, 2014 at approximately 3:00 am, Officer Nate Aronson conducted a traffic stop on Minot Ave. in the area of the East Wareham Fire Station after noticing the vehicle was uninspected and had a defective rear light. The operator was identified as 21 year old Marcus Gomes of Onset, MA.
Due to the observed movements of the operator during the motor vehicle stop, further investigation was conducted, which led to officers locating a loaded .45 semi-automatic handgun inside the glove compartment of the vehicle. As the search of the glove compartment was taking place, Mr. Gomes became very uncooperative and attempted to run from the scene, but was apprehended after a brief struggle with officers. Cash in the amount of $885 was seized from the person of Mr. Gomes as possible evidence, which will be further investigated.
Marcus Gomes was charged with Possession of a Loaded Firearm Without a Permit, Possession of Ammunition Without a Permit, Disorderly Conduct, Resisting Arrest, and Assault & Battery on a Police Officer. He will be arraigned on Monday, February 3, 2014 at the Wareham District Court.
Interim Chief Kevin Walsh praised the alert and professional actions of the officers involved in this incident, which served as a reminder of the dangers of that can arise during a “routine traffic stop”.
