On Friday, August 1, 2014 at approximately 1:30 pm, officers of the Wareham Police Department responded to the area of Onset Ave. and East Blvd. for a disturbance involving several males fighting, one of which reportedly brandished what appeared to be a machete. According to the reporting party, the male carrying a machete left the scene in a blue Chrysler Sebring that was observed and stopped by Officer Paul Somers approximately one mile away on Rte. 6&28 in the area of the 99 Restaurant.
During investigation of the incident, a search of the vehicle, which was driven by 22 year old Kohlbey Hammond of Onset, MA, a black machete was located in the rear seat under clothing items. Mr. Hammond explained to officers that his vehicle was struck by a rock on Onset Avenue in the area of the Point Independence Bridge, at which time he pulled over to confront a male he believed threw the rock. Mr. Hammond’s passenger, 20 year old Aurthor Mpofu of West Wareham, MA, stated he pulled out a machete from the vehicle to defend himself during the altercation.
According a statement provided by the victim, Mr. Hammond and Mr. Mpofu, both of whom are unknown to him, chased him and a friend while swinging the machete. There were no injuries as a result of this incident. Witnesses were also interviewed at the scene.
Aurthor Mpofu was placed under arrest and charged with Assault with a Dangerous Weapon (machete), while Kohlbey Hammond was placed under arrest and charged with Assault with a Dangerous Weapon (Joint Venture). Both are being held at the Wareham Police Department pending bail and will be arraigned at the Wareham 4th District Court on Monday, August 4, 2014.
