On Tuesday, February 4, 2014 at approximately 5:30 pm, patrol officers responded to 87 Mayflower Lane in East Wareham for a reported past break and entering incident. An adult resident reported being awakened by what was discovered to be two masked males, who ran from the residence upon being noticed. No weapons were shown by the suspects, and no injuries occurred during the incident.
During a search of the area, officers and detectives received an anonymous tip via the Wareham Police Department Text-A-Tip program, which provided vital information relative to the incident. The provided Text-A-Tip information led to a search for possible evidence at 79 Puritan Ave., where jewelry owned by a resident at 87 Mayflower Lane was recovered.
As a result of the recovery of evidence, matching descriptive information, and a match of sneaker prints discovered at both addresses, 25 year old Joseph Tavares of 79 Puritan Ave. was placed under arrest for B&E Daytime (felony), Larceny Under $250, and Malicious Destruction of Property (Damaged door at 87 Mayflower Lane). Mr. Tavares is being held at Wareham PD and will be arraigned at Wareham 4th District Court on Thursday, February 6, 2014.
Continued investigation of the incident has also led to the application of a warrant for the arrest of the second male suspect involved in this incident. This press release will be updated with further information regarding the identification and involvement of the second suspect as it becomes available.
Interim Chief of Police Kevin Walsh praised the investigative police work of the involved officer and detectives during this incident, which led to results that were due in large part to the information provided through the Text-A-Tip program. The program, which can be accessed through the Wareham PD web site, allows the public to provide anonymous information that is relayed to officers and detectives, who evaluate the information and take appropriate action.
