On Monday, December 16, 2013, the Wareham Police Department, in partnership with Target, held its annual “Shop with a Cop” event at the Wareham Crossing Target store. During this event, 10 area children were each paired with a police officer to roam the store and spend $100 to purchase gifts for family members, friends, or themselves, which were then wrapped by the children with assistance from Target “elves”. The children and their parents are treated to pizza and soda prior to their shopping spree.
Elementary school aged children who may not have the financial means to purchase gifts were selected by to participate in the event by School Resource Officer Karl Baptiste, with recommendations provided by Wareham School Department officials and teachers.
Interim Chief Kevin Walsh said that while the event was fun for the children, the participating police officers found the evening just as enjoyable, as they shopped throughout Target with their newly assigned partners. “What made an impression on all officers was that the children thought of their parents and siblings before themselves as they shopped,” said Chief Walsh.
The Wareham Police Department would like to extend a sincere “Thank You” to the management and staff of Target, the Wareham Police Association, American Pizza, Santoros, Minerva’s Pizza, and Barnacle Bob’s (BB’s) for their much appreciated generosity and donations that made this event possible. Special thanks go to the following officers who volunteered their time as shopping partners: Officers Nate Aronson, Karl Baptiste (organizer), Jen Braley, Dean Decas, Ryan Gomes, Zina Kelsch, Blaise Lalli, and Aaron Pacheco, along with Sgt. Walter Correia and Interim Police Chief Kevin Walsh.
