On Thursday, October 3, 2013 at approximately 3:00 pm, a 75 woman was approached by an unknown male while loading groceries into her vehicle at Stop & Shop on Cranberry Highway. The male reportedly placed his fingers against the woman’s back and ordered her to drive him to a nearby bank, where money was to be withdrawn. The woman and the suspect arrived at the bank, but were unable to withdraw money and left the bank lot on Onset Avenue, headed toward Onset Center.
Less than a quarter mile from the bank property, the woman noticed a Wareham Police Department cruiser at the intersection of Midway St. and Onset Ave., at which time she immediately stopped the vehicle and alerted the officer that she needed help. As the woman spoke with the officer, the suspect, later identified as 31 year old Matthew Mullen of Wareham, moved to the driver side of the vehicle and sped from the scene. The officer radioed other Wareham PD units and pursued the vehicle into the Onset Center area, briefly losing sight of it until several civilian witnesses alerted officers of the location of the vehicle, and the fact that Mr. Mullen was now attempting to leave the area in another vehicle.
After stopping in the area of Main Ave. and East Central Ave. in Onset, Mr. Mullen entered a second vehicle, which was occupied by a weapon, her husband, and their two month old baby, who was secured in the back seat. Mr. Mullen reportedly entered the back seat of the vehicle, stated he possessed a gun, and ordered the female operator to leave the area. Within seconds, WPD patrol units surrounded the vehicle and placed Mr. Mullen in custody without further incident. It should be noted there were no injuries reported by anyone involved in this incident.
As a result of his actions regarding his involvement with the elderly woman, Matthew Mullen has been charged with the following:
Assault to Rob a Person Over Age 60 While Armed
Larceny of a Motor Vehicle
Failure to Stop for Police
Negligent Operation of a Motor Vehicle
Operating a Motor Vehicle with a Suspended License
As a result of his involvement with the occupants of the second vehicle, Mr. Mullen has been charged with Carjacking and 3 additional charges of Kidnapping.
Matthew Mullen was held overnight at the Wareham Police Department without bail, and will be arraigned on the charges at the Wareham 4th District Court on Friday, October 4, 2013.
