On Tuesday, May 28, 2013, Lieutenant John Walcek of the Wareham Police Department was awarded the 2013 Massachusetts Emergency Manager of the Year Award by the Northeast States Emergency Consortium at their annual meeting of Emergency Management personnel at the DCU Center in Worcester, MA. The conference, which concentrated on all hazards planning and general networking between emergency planning personnel, was attended by over 500 emergency management designees from all areas of Massachusetts.
Lieutenant Walcek, who is the Deputy Emergency Management Director for the Town of Wareham, was recognized for his instrumental efforts in organizing and coordinating a Local Emergency Planning Committee (LEPC) for the Town of Wareham, which did not exist prior to 2012. Comprised of personnel representing all local public safety agencies and resources, the Wareham LEPC plans for emergency response actions pertaining to issues related to storms, hazardous material situations, hurricanes, and various natural disasters. Due largely in part to the cooperation of the Massachusetts Maritime Academy Emergency Management Degree Internship program, the Wareham LEPC was certified at the highest level of state certification by the Massachusetts Emergency management Agency (MEMA).
MEMA local coordinator Doug Forbes stated, “Lt. John Walcek is one of the finest public safety officials that I have ever worked with. His Comprehensive Emergency Management plan is among the best in the country. I would like to congratulate John on his well-deserved award.”
Chief Richard Stanley, Emergency Management Director for the Town of Wareham, stated this award was well earned by Lt. Walcek, who remained stalwart in his dedication toward reaching the highest level of certification for our community. Chief Stanley was also quick to point out that this award recognizes the efforts of all members of the Wareham LEPC, and is truly a team award. Chief Stanley stated, “The leadership and vision of Lt. Walcek as recognized by MEMA has shown the Commonwealth that the Town of Wareham values the highest levels of preparedness and professionalism.”
