On Thursday, January 10, 2013 at approximately 1:30 pm, patrol officers of the Wareham Police Department responded to a motor vehicle accident on Onset Ave. and Old Town Road involving a Wareham Police Department Ford Expedition cruiser and a 2005 PT Cruiser station wagon, which turned over once before coming to a rest. Onset Fire Department and Wareham EMS personnel responded to the scene as well, due to reported injuries. An 18 year old male passenger in the PT Cruiser and Sgt. Christopher Park, the operator of the police vehicle, were both transported to Tobey Hospital in Wareham, due to non-life-threatening injuries. Although the driver of the PT Cruiser, 19-year-old Raymond Green of Wareham was extricated from the vehicle, he did not complain of injuries and refused medical treatment at the scene.
Investigation of the accident, which included a witness statement, determined that the PT Cruiser exited Old Town Road in an attempt to turn left onto Onset Ave. and was struck by the police vehicle, which was traveling south toward Onset Center at the time of the collision. Further investigation and statements at the scene revealed that upon approaching the intersection of Old Town Road and Onset Ave., Mr. Green inadvertently dropped a drink bottle, which became wedged between the gas pedal and his foot, causing the vehicle to accelerate onto Onset Ave in front of the oncoming police vehicle.
As a result of the accident investigation, the operator of the PT Cruiser, whose name is being withheld at this time, was issued a traffic citation for making an improper turn and unsafe operation of a motor vehicle. Both vehicles sustained significant damage and were towed from the scene.
