As Hurricane Sandy approaches our area, emergency services personnel in Wareham have been meeting to monitor the weather forecasts and evaluate appropriate and necessary actions. The Wareham Police Department is actively monitoring the situation and will relay information to residents when necessary.
At this time, high winds and minor to moderate coastal flooding issues are forecasted beginning Sunday night, with increased wind and rain occurring from Monday into Tuesday night. Emergency information regarding the hurricane may be obtained by dialing “211.” At this time, there have been no evacuation orders issued for any area in Wareham. In the event that shelter is needed, The Wareham Mulit-Service Center will open as a shelter at 8:00 am on Monday, October 29th.
Residents are reminded that the shelter does not accept pets. In the event that flooding, or any other reason necessitates shelter, evacuation notice will be given and all affected residents will be advised.
If shelter is required before 8:00 am on Monday morning, the American Red Cross has activated regional shelters across the Commonwealth. The nearest shelters prior to 8:00 am on Monday are located at BMC Durfee High School, #360 Elsbree St. Fall River, MA, and Weymouth High School, #1 Wildcat Way, Weymouth, MA. Further information may be obtained by dialing “211.”
Residents of Wareham are advised that all schools have been closed for Monday, October 29th. Town Meeting has also been cancelled and will be re-scheduled for a later date and time.
Please know that this weather situation is being closely monitored and changes can occur at a moment’s notice. Although the Wareham Police Department will provide all necessary information to those who contact our department, we urge the public to use the emergency 911 system for emergencies only, so that that priority situations are handled in the appropriate manner and speed. During this storm, the Wareham Police Department urges citizens to take great care, and to travel on the roadways only when necessary for safety reasons.
