On Monday, December 11, 2016 at approximately 9:30 am , WPD patrol officers, EMS personnel, and Wareham Fire Department personnel responded to a single motor vehicle crash against a guardrail in the area of 2680 Cranberry Highway.
Upon arrival at the scene, Officer Matthew Donovan noticed a 1998 Toyota Camry with extensive damage wedged onto the guardrail. Based on the location of the vehicle and the debris, it appeared the vehicle crossed over the yellow road lines while traveling north on Cranberry Hwy. (Rte. 28) in the area Robertson’s GMC, then struck the guardrail on the opposite side of the road. preliminary investigation shows the operator may have nodded off during the incident.
Officers reported the operator, 31 year old Wareham resident Matthew Goodchild, was attempting to eat a can of fruit while swaying back and forth as he attempted to stand at the scene of the crash. Fresh blood consistent with a point of injection was noticed on Mr. Goodchild’s arm, which indicated possible drug use.
Mr. Goodchild, who reported sustaining no injuries, failed field sobriety tests and was placed into custody fir Operating Under the Influence of Drugs and marked lanes violations. Two empty pill bottles, 2 used needles, and a burnt spoon were found in Mr. Goodchild’s vehicle at the time of the arrest.
Matthew Goodchild was arraigned on the criminal charges at Wareham District Court during the afternoon of Monday, December 11th.
