Onset Man Arrested After Identified By DNA Evidence

tavaresOn Tuesday, December 17, 2013, Wareham Police Department detectives obtained an arrest warrant for 52 year old Arnold Tavares of Onset after receiving information from the State Police Crime Laboratory that indicated blood samples provided by detectives after a commercial break and entering incident were analyzed and found to match the DNA profile of Mr. Tavares.

On December 27, 2012 at approximately 12:30 am, Wareham PD officers responded to the Wareham Country Market on Marion Road and noticed the store had been entered through a broken window. Store surveillance footage showed the lone suspect, who was unable to be identified, enter the store at approximately 12:10 am, use a hammer to damage a coin machine, then leave the store and run toward Swifts Beach Road.

Examination of the scene showed the suspect apparently cut himself on window glass when entering the store, as blood droppings were noticed in various areas. Blood swabs from the scene were obtained and submitted to the State Police Crime Laboratory for analysis and possible DNA identification. On Tuesday, December 16, 2013, DNA analysis results identified Arnold Tavares as the suspect in the case, and detectives obtained the arrest warrant.

Arnold Tavares was placed under arrest at his Onset residence without incident and was arraigned at the Wareham 4th District Court on charges of Breaking & Entering in the Nighttime (felony), Malicious Destruction of Property Over $250, and Larceny from a Building.
