Vehicle Crash results in Arrest for OUI

On Thursday, January 10, 2013 at approximately 11:45 pm, Officer James White was patrolling in the area of the Mill Pond Package Store, when he noticed an occupied vehicle parked on the property of the closed business. When Officer White entered the parking lot to investigate further, the vehicle sped away at a high rate of speed and traveled toward Main Street. Due to the speed of the suspect vehicle through the Main St. business district, the officer lost sight of the vehicle, but then noticed the vehicle on its side in the area of British Landing Condominiums, which is located at #53 Main Street. The vehicle turned on its side after striking the base of a telephone pole.

Upon Officer White’s approach of the vehicle, the operator and sole occupant of the vehicle abruptly ran from the scene, but was apprehended after a brief foot pursuit. The operator, then identified as 31 year old former Wareham and current Fall River, MA resident Christopher Holmes stated at the scene that he had been drinking and stole the vehicle, which belonged to a family member. It should be noted that the vehicle had not been reported stolen at the time of the incident. At the scene, officers were notified that Mr. Holmes was operating the vehicle with a suspended driver’s license and had an outstanding arrest warrant issued by New Bedford District Court.

Mr. Holmes was transported from the scene by Wareham EMS to be checked for minor  injuries related to the motor vehicle accident and was released to the custody of the Wareham Police Department shortly thereafter.

Christopher Holmes has been charged with Operating Under the Influence of Alcohol, Reckless Operation of a Motor Vehicle, Failure to Stop for a Police Officer, Use of a Motor Vehicle without Authority, and Operating with a Suspended Driver’s License. He will be arraigned at the Wareham 4th District Court on Friday, January 11, 2013.
