Press Release 1-1-2012

Prepared by Lt. Kevin Walsh

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
On January 1, 2012, at approximately 1:30 am, Officer Nathan Aronson conducted a motor vehicle stop on the Cranberry Highway in the area of the Benny’s store, after noticing that the vehicle had a defective headlight and had failed the required Registry inspection.

While speaking with the operator, a bottle of liquor and a double-edged knife were noticed on the front seat within reach of the three male occupants of the vehicle.

For safety reasons, the occupants were removed from the vehicle, at which time one of the males, later identified as 23 year old Ryan Cushing of Mashpee, MA, ran from the scene, while reaching into his waistband area. After a brief foot chase by Officer Daniel Henderson, Mr. Cushing was apprehended after sustaining an ankle injury. On the ground next to Mr. Cushing, a
loaded .380 semiautomatic pistol was located. Mr. Cushing was placed into custody and transported to Tobey Hospital in Wareham to be treated with regard to the ankle injury.

At the scene of the original motor vehicle stop, the remaining occupants, identified as 22 year old Justin Groom (operator) and 21 year old William Branch, both of Mashpee, MA, were placed under arrest, charged with possession of the double edged knife. Approximately $1400 cash in the possession of Mr. Groom was seized, due to the fact that narcotics detection trained K-9 alerted to the presence of illegal drugs on the cash. There was no other evidence located inside the vehicle.

The suspects and charges are as follows:

  • Justin Groom age 22, 101 Thornberry Circle Mashpee, MA
Possession of a Dangerous Weapon; Double Edged Knife
  • William Branch age 21, 14 Holly St. Mashpee, MA
Possession of a Dangerous Weapon; Double Edged Knife
  • Ryan Cushing age 23, 13 Main St. Mashpee, MA
Possession of a Loaded Firearm Without a Permit
Possession of a Dangerous Weapon: Double Edged Knife

The suspects have been bailed for a court appearance on Tuesday, Jan. 3, in Wareham District
